Taking the environment seriously, working for Londoners

Following the June 2004 elections, Mike took on responsibility for environmental issues within the GLA Lib Dem group and is a member of the Assembly's Environment Committee where he is taking a special lead on food issues. He was appointed by the Mayor to represent the Assembly on the London Sustainable Development Commission.

The Lib Dems firmly believe in the 'Polluter Pays' principle to ensure that wherever possible the producers of pollution, rather than taxpayers, pay the costs of environmental protection. Mike sees environmental action as part of the wider sustainable development agenda, balancing social and economic benefits and costs.

Among Mike's priorities are:

increasing and improving residential and business recycling, and seeking new ways to minimise all forms of waste
encouraging energy saving as the most effective way to cut carbon emissions, and then boosting renewable energy use
cutting pollution and congestion, supporting 'low emission zones' and the introduction of environmentally friendly buses, and promoting walking and cycling
maintaining pressure on the Government to meet EU air quality requirements for all of London
preserving and promoting London's open spaces and working to ensure all practical new development is on brown-field sites
