The Economic and Social Development Committee

Between 2002 and 2004, Mike chaired the London Assembly’s Economic and Social Development Committee and led for the Liberal Democrats on regeneration and related issues, from inner cities to outer suburbs, including affordable housing, unemployment, low pay, small firms, the City, inward investment and the impact of globalisation. 

Some of the topics addressed by the Committee are listed below. 

• how to best target regeneration resources on those most in need
• London Weighting - taking forward the report of an independent Advisory Panel which recommended an alternative methodology for setting public sector pay.
• E-government in London - a scrutiny of London Connects
• The Role of the Public/Private Sectors in contributing to economic and social development - looking beyond special funding programmes and challenging main spending programmes and private firms to think about the economic and social regeneration potential of their own activities.
• Scrutiny of the Mayor's revised Economic Development Strategy
• Quarterly monitoring and review of LDA performance against its Framework and national targets
• Affordable housing and homelessness prevention
